Honorary Consulate of the Bahamas in Kenya Marks Independence Anniversary with Tree-Planting Ceremony
Limuru, Kenya — 11 July 2026 — The Honorary Consulate of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in the Republic of Kenya commemorated the 53rd Anniversary of the Independence of The Bahamas witgh a symbolic tree-growing ceremony held at Naishola Gardens in Limuru, bringing together invited guests and friends of the Consulate to mark this important national milestone.
The Bahamas gained independence on 10 July 1973, becoming a sovereign nation following a journey shaped by dignity, self-determination and national pride under the leadership of Sir Lynden Pindling, remembered as the Father of the Nation.
The ceremony also marked the first official event of Mr. Segeni Ngethe, Honorary Consul for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the Republic of Kenya, providing an opportunity to celebrate Bahamian independence while reflecting on the emerging relationship between the two countries and the possibilities that lie ahead.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Ngethe reflected on the symbolism behind planting trees to commemorate the anniversary:
“When we plant a tree, we are doing something simple, but also deeply symbolic. We are expressing hope. We are saying that what we plant today can grow, take root, give shade, protect the soil, and serve people we may never even meet.”
He added:
“In the same way, the relationship between The Bahamas and Kenya is still young, but full of promise. My ambition is for the Honorary Consulate to help build a strong and meaningful relationship between our two countries, opening new avenues for cooperation and opportunity that can deliver lasting value for both Bahamians and Kenyans.”
As the Honorary Consulate begins its work in Kenya, it will focus on strengthening connections and advancing opportunities between the two countries, particularly in tourism, labour mobility and trade, while promoting greater awareness of The Bahamas and supporting the development of mutually beneficial engagement.
The trees planted during the ceremony will serve as living reminders of Bahamian independence, growth, friendship and environmental stewardship.
